Science Educator Researcher Former Professional Athlete
Sonja is a chemistry professor, mother of three and a former professional basketball player. As an undergraduate, Sonja attended Georgia Tech where she lettered in basketball, earning All-ACC and honorable mention All-American honors before being drafted into the WNBA. Sonja played for the Phoenix Mercury for the 2003 season and afterwards, for various professional teams in Europe and China.
In 2009, Sonja embarked on a new journey at the University of Maryland, College Park where she began her graduate work in organic synthesis. In 2012, Sonja completed her masters in chemistry and began yet another journey - parenthood. Sonja is the co-author on five peer reviewed publications and is actively involved in research.
Currently, Sonja teaches introductory and majors chemistry courses at North Shore Community College and conducts Chemistry Education Research.
